Community-based Teaching and Learning

The discipline of American Studies has become increasingly engaged with issues of community, whether understood as global, national, local. This page provides resources that link American Studies practitioners to the developing pedagogies of community-based learning, research, and service.

ASA Community Partnership Grant Program
The American Studies Association Community Partnership Program offers grants to support collaborative, interdisciplinary community projects using American Studies pedagogy, curriculum, research, and other resources. Crossroads provides information about the program, application materials, and profiles of existing projects.

National Service Learning Clearinghouse
A project of Learn and Serve America, the Clearinghouse provides a wide array of resources to support service learning in higher education, K-12 schools, tribal programs, and other community-based education initiatives.

Campus Compact
Campus Compact is "a coalition of more than 900 college and university presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education." The organization publishes the online Campus Compact Reader, which includes articles on service learning, civic engagement, and education reform.

Center for Community Change
The Center for Community Change helps "low-income people, especially people of color, build powerful, effective organizations through which they can change their communities and public policies for the better."

Applied Research Center
The ARC brings together activists and academics to focus research on community organizing. Its Race and Public Policy Program "advances a racial justice framework for the analysis and advocacy of public policy."

Poverty and Race Research Action Council
PRRAC "links social science research to advocacy work in order to successfully address problems at the intersection of race and poverty."

Rural School and Community Trust
The Trust publishes Rural Roots, a bi-monthly newsletter that focuses on place-based learning.

Edvantia
This site provides many useful links to rural education resources in the areas of American Indian and Alaska Native Education, Mexican American Education, Migrant Education, Outdoor Education, and Small Schools.

Coalition for Community Schools
"The Coalition advocates for community schools as the vehicle for strengthening schools, families and communities so that together they can improve student learning."

Institute for Local Self-Reliance
ILSR combines research and action to support sustainable communities.

Education Development Center
The EDC works in 50 countries, building projects on an educational foundation "that builds knowledge and skill, makes possible a deeper understanding of the world, and engages learners as active, problem-solving participants."

Center for Social Research Methods
The CSRM offers resources for those involved in applied social research.

Trent Centre for Community-Based Education
The Centre is a joint project of Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, the Peterborough Social Planning Council, and the Community Opportunity and Innovation Network. This partnership works with community organizations to develop research, planning, and community development projects involving Trent University students.

Public History Resource Center
Formed in 1999 by four graduate students taking a seminar in public history at the University of Maryland, PHRC "exists to support, promote, and disseminate the scholarly and professional work of public historians."

National Council on Public History
NCPH sponsors the H-Public discussion network.
